Our Story

Since 2004 the Bariatric Medical Institute has been providing ongoing behaviour change expertise. Located in Canada's capital, BMI has helped literally thousands of Canadians improve their nutrition and physical activity and it has established itself as one of Canada's most credible behavioural weight management centres working with both public and private institutions. Constant Health is its digital evolution.
The cycle of being reactive versus proactive to patients' needs has always been a clinical challenge. Only learning of a client's struggles days and sometimes weeks after the fact, BMI's team appreciated that as technology was becoming more affordable so were solutions to their problem.   

Designed with an equal focus on both the behavioral and medical science required for long term weight management, the team at BMI began to imagine what the ideal solution would look like. A tool that would be completely customizable to each client's needs and diet preferences, allowing health professionals to both work with and monitor successes and challenges in real-time all while creating an almost effortless process to have an interactive appointment.  

Our founding team has over 50 combined years of clinical and academic experience including managing over 10,000 patients, a national best-selling book, and 1000s of combined professional talks, media appearances, and teaching events. Constant Health and its 15-week weight management program is their distillation.

Dr. Yoni Freedhoff

Since 2004, Dr. Yoni Freedhoff, an Associate Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Ottawa, has dedicated his practice to obesity medicine.

Canada's most outspoken obesity expert, Dr. Freedhoff is regularly sought out by the international media for commentary on nutrition and weight matters, and his book, The Diet Fix: Why Diets Fail and How to Make Them Work. Dr. Freedhoff's diet agnostic philosophy and lessons learned from working with over 10,000 patients is the foundation of what Constant Health has been built upon.

Dr. Alexandra Segal

Dr. Alexandra Segal, C. Psych has been working with Dr. Freedhoff and the multidisciplinary team at the Bariatric Medical Institute since 2008.

Dr. Segal’s practice is in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and she is a Diplomate and Certified Cognitive Behavior Therapist with the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. In addition to helping design the program and technology to work within a CBT framework, Dr. Segal works with dietitians at Constant Health to help maximize their effectiveness in helping clients reach their goals.

Graham Burgsma

Graham Burgsma has been with Constant Health from its inception, joining when the concept was just an idea on a whiteboard.

Listed as a star developer in Canadian Business’s "30 Under 30," Graham brings extensive experience in iOS and backend development. Prior to Constant Health, he contributed to leading tech projects across health tech, media, and global platforms.

As CTO, Graham ensures Constant Health’s technology delivers seamless, user-friendly experiences, empowering clients to achieve their health goals.

The science behind the program

Designed after careful study of scientific, peer reviewed studies that looked not only at how individuals lost their weight, but also how they kept it off for five years or more. Constant Health leverages clinical expertise with the latest research in weight management, disease prevention, and behaviour change.
Obesity

The good news is that many, if not all, of obesity's risks can be reduced or even eliminated with sustained weight-loss. In fact, losing just 10% of your current body weight decreases your risk of dying from an obesity related complication by as much as 35%!
Weight Loss

Much like telling someone that they should "buy low and sell high" to make money in the stock market, telling someone "eat less and exercise more" for weight loss has little value. Utilizing the latest research on nutrition and behaviour change our team of health professionals work with you one-on-one to guide you using the most effective methods of weight management.

Behaviour

Sometimes knowing what to do isn’t the issue, it’s having the right approach, the right support and the right tools to actually sustain better habits over time. From the start you'll have personalized, collaborative, goal based sessions with each small change being created with a focus of sustainability.

Excercise

Exercise alone does not burn enough calories to cause a significant weight loss as it is far easier to obtain calories by eating than it is to lose them by lets say walking. For example, in order to work off the calories contained in one Big Mac and large fries you would need to go for a brisk seven hour walk.

Diet

Our dietitians are diet-agnostic, focusing on the science of nutrition and weight management with the ability to adapt their recommendations to your diet of choice. Regardless of the diet-lifestyle you choose to follow, you will learn that hunger and deprivation are NOT required for successful weight loss.

While undereating and over exercising certainly can lead to short term results born out of suffering, we believe you need to actually like the life you're living while you're losing the weight or else you're never going to keep it off.
